WHO:

During a 2006 summer camp, some New Orleans children ages 10-13 created public service announcements to share their experiences and explore unexpressed feelings about Hurricane Katrina and its effect on their lives, families and communities. A new documentary called Children of New Orleans: Still Weathering the Storm chronicles this process and includes the PSAs the students created.

A special screening takes place this Friday evening, November 17, 2006. Children featured in the film will be in attendance with their families and friends and will talk about how they feel today about Katrina’s aftermath and what they think people can do to help with New Orleans recovery.

This web site has been developed where in the “Your Story” section other New Orleans youth are encouraged to visit to tell their own stories, post their own photos and talk to other youth about what they’re doing to recover from Katrina.

WHAT:

The youth involved in this project attended a 2006 summer camp operated by New Orleans-based Operation Reach where they were given cameras to help process their feelings and talk about their experiences - for the first time. The camp and the film were funded by Mercy Corps as part of the agency’s Katrina recovery humanitarian program. Even today, more than one year after Katrina, many children in New Orleans are still struggling to recover from physical and psychological damage caused by the storm and they ask for more help.
